Paving

Gwrhyd paving is a very sought after resource, having twice the strength of its rivals. The riven paving has natural hues of blues, greys, browns and okra’s, whereas the diamond sawn has a consistent Blue/Grey pallet. Our Riven Paving is hand split from stone slabs in the upper layers of the quarry, skilled masons make use of the natural beds in the stone and using a hammer and chisel split the tone along a natural fault line. The slabs are then sawn to required width and random length. You can also clearly see ripple marks caused by the action of the water. There are superb examples of this in the Pennant paving supplied by Gwrhyd at the main entrance of Swansea’s National Waterfront Museum. Here virtually every stone bears either ripple marks from some Carboniferous riverbed or marks made by tunnel systems, preserved forever in stone and destined now to be walked over by generations of museum goers.

Our Diamond Sawn Paving comes from denser block at the lower levels of the quarry. These blocks, some in excess of 25tonnes, are then Diamond sawn into scants on our 2.5 metre primary circular saw. These scants are then processed further on smaller saws to the required width and we supply all paving in random lengths to make the best use of our resource. Individual or bespoke sizes can be produced on request. We supply sawn paving in a range of widths, thickness and finishes. Local Authorities specify our Commercial Paving for town centre projects together with matching kerbs and setts in Riven, Sawn or Flamed finish.
