Geology – Mineralogically, natural Blue Pennant stone is a subgreywacke or lithic sandstone. Typically, the stone consists of 60% quartz grain with the remainder being fragments of schist and quartzite. Feldspar, a mineral common in many sandstones is largely absent giving a resistance to weathering. Individual beds of sandstone usually represent a single depositional episode and as a result are hard and durable.

Reserves – The Gwrhyd Specialist Stone Quarry has over 100 years of reserves and so will be available for many generations to enjoy.

Slip Resistance – Pennant sandstone remains amongst the very best slip resistant paving available and the benefit is that they retain their non-slip properties as they wear.

Colour & Textures – Gwrhyd natural Blue Pennant stone is extracted from beds which occur naturally at the quarry face. It is available in a riven format and is completely unique in colour which will vary from rust and ochre browns through to the coolest blues and greys. Variations in colour and texture are a natural feature of the stone. Some on-site dressing may be required.

Strength – Pennant sandstone values have traditionally varied but Welsh Blue Pennant stone was always regarded as the best. The independent test values for the Gwrhyd Pennant make it the strongest Pennant sandstone available in the UK.

Durability – The stone has been independently tested and is completely frost resistant and has extremely very low abrasion values making it one of the most durable materials available.
